TOPEKA, Kan., May 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- At AT&T1, we've invested more than $775 million in our Kansas wireless and wired networks during 2014-2016. These investments drive a wide range of upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for residents and businesses. They also improve critical services that support public safety and first responders.
In 2016, AT&T made nearly 630 wireless network upgrades in Kansas. These upgrades included new cell sites, the addition of network capacity, and new wireless high-speed Internet connections.
Following the passage of recent state legislation, AT&T will continue its investment in Kansas with additional upgrades.
"Last year, Gov. Brownback signed legislation that encourages companies to invest more in wireless infrastructure. Thanks to his support, and the hard work of the legislature and other Kansas leaders, we're now speeding our wireless buildout plans in Kansas with tens of millions of dollars dedicated to improving its mobile network," said Mike Scott, president, AT&T Kansas. "This investment will also pave the path to 5G mobile services in the years ahead."
"Access to technology is a key economic driver and can transform a small or new business helping it innovate and grow," said state Sen. Rob Olson, chair of the Senate Utilities Committee. "AT&T's network investments in Kansas help ensure that our state's businesses and residents have the tools they need to stay connected and are well-positioned for future innovations."
The AT&T LTE network covers nearly 400 million people in North America. Notable Kansas network enhancements in 2016 included:
- Nearly 630 wireless network upgrades, including new cell sites and expanded capacity at existing cell sites.
- Expansion of the AT&T Fiber ultra-fast internet footprint, which now reaches nearly 125,000 living units in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
- Expansion of the Distributed Antenna System at the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence.
The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) recently chose AT&T to build a nationwide public safety broadband network. The network will be dedicated to America's police, firefighters, EMS personnel and other first responders when they need it. Should Kansas opt-in to the FirstNet network, we will build upon our current and planned investments with a dedicated focus on the state's first responders.
And we would expect to make a significant investment to upgrade and maintain the Kansas FirstNet network over the next 25 years, bringing your first responders the coverage, value and experience they expect.
