AT&T Grants $126,000 to Assist Year Up Atlanta with Technology Updates and Further Growth in the Atlanta Region
First Lady of Georgia Sandra Deal to Present the Check at Year Up's Atlanta Site on Sept. 14
ATLANTA, Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Year Up announced today that it will receive a $126,000 contribution from the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropy arm of AT&T, to be used for technology updates and to support the organization's growth in the Atlanta community. AT&T will present the check to Year Up along with First Lady of Georgia Sandra Deal on Sept. 14 and a tour of the program's facility will follow.
Lauded by President Barack Obama for its proven, innovative approach, Year Up is a national nonprofit organization that provides career training to urban young adults and helps them secure internships with top US companies, including AT&T. Its scalable model prepares students for the workforce using a unique combination of technical and professional instruction, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internships. Successful completion of the intensive, one-year program enables graduates to move into full-time employment and higher education. Newly released research independently conducted by Economic Mobility Corporation indicates that students who complete the Year Up program have access to higher quality jobs and earn up to 30 percent more than those who did not.
"The AT&T Foundation has a strong record of supporting initiatives and projects that help our students prepare for the workforce," said Sylvia Russell, president, AT&T Georgia. "I am proud we are able to support the great work already underway at Year Up to help our youth succeed."
"The success of our program is a direct result of strong, committed companies like AT&T that share our vision of closing the Opportunity Divide and ensuring that young adults in our community have the resources they need to pursue successful careers," said Kweku Forstall, executive director of Year Up Atlanta. "AT&T's generous support will help these individuals reach their full potential while at the same time supplying Corporate America with skilled local talent."
"As a lifelong educator, preparing students for the workforce has always been a top priority," said Georgia's First Lady Sandra Deal. "Today, due to the partnership between Year Up and the AT&T Foundation, we are a step closer in helping students achieve more. I commend Year Up and AT&T for their commitment to Atlanta's youth."
This announcement comes as Year Up continues its expansion across the country, with sites in Atlanta, Boston, National Capital Region, New York, Providence, San Francisco, Puget Sound and, most recently, Chicago.
AT&T is committed to advancing education, strengthening communities and improving lives. As part of its commitment, AT&T launched Aspire in April 2008. AT&T Aspire is one of the largest-ever corporate commitments to address high school success and workforce readiness.
