AT&T Expands Wireless Capacity for Mobile Broadband Network in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties
Additional Spectrum Allocated for 3G Voice and Data Applications
PARAMUS, N.J., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T* announced today that it continues to expand mobile broadband coverage and capacity in New Jersey. As a result of an upgrade in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties, customers in these areas are expected to experience improved 3G wireless voice and data connectivity and performance, especially during peak hours.
The network enhancement includes the addition of new layers of frequency, also known as "carriers," to more efficiently manage available spectrum and increase 3G capacity. The result is an increased allocation of network resources for AT&T's 3G network to support ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services.
The additions to AT&T's wireless network have been applied to more than 100 cell sites across the three counties. In Bergen and Passaic counties this includes Paramus, Hackensack, Englewood, Teaneck, Lodi, Elmwood Park, Paterson, North Paterson, Clifton and Passaic. Capacity was also enhanced along stretches of I-80, the Garden State Parkway, and Routes 4, 17 and 46. In Hudson County, network capacity was expanded in Jersey City, Hoboken, along the New Jersey turnpike extension and in West New York.
"Our goal is pretty simple, we are constantly working to make sure our customers have a great mobile broadband experience every time they make a call, check e-mail, download a song or video, or surf the Internet on their AT&T device in the Garden State," said Tom DeVito, vice president and general manager for AT&T in New Jersey and New York. "Adding more capacity to our 3G network is just one way we are reaching that goal."
Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent from 2007 to 2009, largely attributed to the increasing popularity of advanced smartphones and the performance of AT&T's mobile broadband network, the nation's fastest. The upgrades are part of previously announced plans to expand the network to increase wireless network capacity in metropolitan New York including northern New Jersey. Last year, AT&T's wireless network investment was nearly $290 million in the metro NY area.
"These investments in smart networks are enabling the innovation of today and tomorrow that will enhance economic growth and stimulate jobs," said J. Michael Schweder, President, AT&T New Jersey. "We will continue to work with local policy makers and other state leaders and officials to create a positive economic environment that provides opportunities for companies to continue to invest in New Jersey."
The expansion of spectrum for 3G use is one of many ongoing network initiatives planned to enhance coverage and capacity across the country. AT&T recently upgraded 3G cell sites nationwide to High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2. Future plans include another upgrade to HSPA+ technology at the end of this year followed by the initial deployment next year of LTE, the next-generation of wireless technology. These advancements, when combined with an ongoing initiative to increase the number of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, are a part of AT&T's strategy to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and in the future.
AT&T's 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, delivering voice service in over 220 countries and data service in more than 195 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as 3G services in more than 120 countries.
