AT&T Expands Mobile Broadband Coverage in Scottsdale
57 New Cell Sites Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Wireless Network
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of 57 new 3G cell sites in Scottsdale that are enhancing coverage for area residents and businesses. With 3G speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.
The new cell sites are one part of AT&T's ongoing efforts to drive innovation and extend its 3G wireless network—the fastest in the nation, according to independent testing. It is also part of AT&T's ongoing investment to build the broadband networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable its customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.
"We're always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage and invest in the local wireless network and Scottsdale residents benefit from policies that encourage infrastructure investment," said Jerry Fuentes, president of AT&T Arizona-New Mexico. "We're committed to providing the best possible experience and unprecedented choice and flexibility in devices, applications and service plans so that our customers have access to the people, information and entertainment they care about."
The majority of the sites, 56 in total, that are enhancing Scottsdale's coverage work as part of a comprehensive system specifically designed to address the terrain challenges in the area. The improved coverage is focused between N. Scottsdale Road to the west, along E. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and extending to N. 124th Street to the east, E. Bell Road to the north, E. Shea Boulevard to the southwest, and beyond Via Linda to the southeast, including along the northern Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community border.
AT&T also activated a 3G cell site at the Scottsdale Stadium, home for the San Francisco Giants' Spring Training, enhancing coverage for fans, area residents and businesses. The improved coverage is focused at the stadium and between N. 68th Street to the west, N. Hayden Road to the east, E. Camelback Road to the north, and E. Thomas Road to the south.
AT&T also recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation's fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T's network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available in 2010 and 2011 on a market by market basis as AT&T combines the new technology with our second initiative to dramatically increase the number of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic connections, adding capacity from cell sites to the AT&T backbone network.
"One of my goals is to make certain that Scottsdale remains an attractive place for companies to invest in new technology that offers business and consumers more choice and more services. It improves our everyday lives and helps economic development efforts," said Mayor Jim Lane.
AT&T's 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers 3G data roaming in more than 115 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 220 countries.
