ATSSA applauds Reps. Barletta, Esty for establishing Road Safety Caucus in House
WASHINGTON, Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) congratulates U.S. Reps. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) and Elizabeth Esty (D-Conn.) on launching the bipartisan Road Safety Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. Reps. Barletta and Esty, both members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, are proven and committed leaders on roadway safety issues in Congress.
"This bipartisan caucus showcases that roadway safety, and infrastructure in general, is an area where members of both political parties can come together and achieve lasting, life-saving results," ATSSA's Vice President of Government Relations, Nate Smith, said. "As Congress works on transportation infrastructure policies throughout this year and next, Reps. Barletta and Esty's leadership in this caucus will be critical to ensuring that reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries remains a cornerstone of federal transportation policy."
Rep. Barletta stated, "I am pleased to announce the creation of the Road Safety Caucus, and I thank my Democratic colleague, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, for joining me in this bipartisan effort. Before I came to Congress, I owned my own line-painting business. I always used to say, you never read the names in the paper of the people whose lives you saved, but that doesn't make roadway safety efforts any less important. I look forward to finding ways Congress can reduce traffic related fatalities and injuries."
Rep. Esty stated, "Upgrades to our roadways can save lives and prevent injuries. I am proud to join Congressman Barletta to form this Caucus, which will foster an important, bipartisan discussion on how we can improve roadway design, and construction to keep our families safe and our businesses growing. Safe roadways protect more than just lives – they save time, which is good for drivers' wallets and our businesses' success. I urge my colleagues in both parties to join us and take action for safer, more efficient roadways – our economy and our future depend on it."
Barletta, a former pavement marking company owner, is chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management. Esty is vice ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
