BOSTON, Feb. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Natural Language Processing (NLP) text analytics provider Linguamatics today announced the implementation of the Linguamatics Health enterprise NLP platform, powered by I2E, at Atrius Health to identify and extract critical clinical information hidden within unstructured patient data.
Atrius Health is a non-profit healthcare leader providing primary care and specialty care to more than 740,000 adult and pediatric patients across eastern and central Massachusetts. As a long-term Accountable Care Organization (ACO) for Medicare, commercial, and Medicaid patients, Atrius Health requires ready access to clinical notes and data to address reporting requirements and advance quality care initiatives, including programs that require the proper identification of at-risk patients to minimize care gaps.
"A vast amount of critical clinical data exists as unstructured text which is difficult to access and analyze. We are leveraging the power of NLP to replace the manual, inefficient data extraction processes that many healthcare organizations struggle with, in order to advance our quality care initiatives more rapidly," said Joe Kimura, MD, Atrius Health's chief medical officer. "Linguamatics NLP allows us to close gaps in care, enhance clinical documentation for chronic disorders, reduce litigation risks, and streamline Medicare ACO quality reporting."
"By operationalizing our use of Linguamatics NLP we can more efficiently support our value-based care initiatives," said Craig Monsen, MD, Atrius Health's medical director of analytics. "Clinicians and patients benefit from more accurate problem lists for chronic disease without adding to existing documentation burdens, the ACO reporting process can be simplified, and Medicare Advantage coding is more complete. We now can expand our patient safety-net efforts using Linguamatics because it is easier to identify patients with difficult to track conditions such as pulmonary nodules. By responding early to harbingers of lung cancer or other conditions for which we have safe, effective preventative interventions, we aim to improve our patient outcomes."
"As we transition to value-based care models, a deeper understanding of each person is critical to give a 360-degree view of an individual's situation to provide the best care. With 80% of EHR data in unstructured form, the use of NLP to fill in those gaps in the jigsaw puzzle is expanding rapidly," said Simon Beaulah, senior director of healthcare for Linguamatics. "We are delighted to work with Atrius Health as an acknowledged leader in value-based care and we look forward to continuing to support their drive for improved efficiency and patient care."
Atrius Health's future plans include the expanded use of I2E to advance additional care initiatives, such as identifying social determinants of health to extend interventions and to support behavioral health care and outreach.
Kimura, Monsen and Beaulah will co-present a webinar hosted by Health IT Answers on February 6 at 1 p.m. ET, to discuss the operationalizing of NLP in support of value-based care.
