There are currently more than 40.3 million Americans over the age of 65, more than any other time in history according to a recent Census Bureau report. Atria is looking for the most inspiring people among this population by asking Facebook users to share a few words about the older people in their lives.
"We're continually amazed at the stories our residents share, and we know there are countless numbers of older Americans who can inspire a younger generation with their own life story," said Ronda Watson, Vice President of Engage Life and Culinary Service. "Everything we do at Atria is designed to encourage seniors to live their best lives possible, and to continue pursuing their passions every day. This is an opportunity for us to identify older adults who exemplify these standards, and share their story with others."
In addition to Watson, the judges' panel is comprised of industry leaders who partner with the company and work with older adults on a regular basis. Other judges include Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA); David Dworkin, creator of the Conductorcise® workout for older adults; David Troxel, Alzheimer's disease expert and author of The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care; and Leonard Kelley, Ph.D., creator of The Wiz Quiz® cognitive fitness game for seniors.
One grand prize winner and the person who nominated the winner will each be awarded a $250 Visa® gift card, and the winner will be featured on the cover of Journal of Active Aging, a bi-monthly magazine published by ICAA. Four honorable mention winners and their nominators will each receive a $100 Visa® gift card. All winners will be featured on the Atria Facebook page during Active Aging Week.
"Atria's approach to finding inspiring stories of older adults is something we are thrilled to be a part of," said Colin Milner, CEO of the ICAA. "While this contest highlights those who inspire us to age well, young and old, it is also a fine example of how Atria is committed to championing the active aging movement by helping to change the way society views aging. This aligns with ICAA's core mission, and we salute and support their efforts."
The contest is free to enter. All nominees must be 65 or older, but anyone 13 or older with a Facebook account may nominate an inspiring senior they know.
