RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Atos, an international leader in digital services, today announced the successful completion of the IT delivery for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games – the most digitally covered Games yet. As Worldwide IT Partner to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Atos delivered the IT systems that shared the results with the world's media and fans in real-time, supported the recruitment of volunteers and issued accreditations to all participants including media and athletes.
Technology team members already in PyeongChang
With less than 18 months to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games, Atos' team in South Korea is now 28 strong. The results systems for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been supplied and IT testing started on June 2016 – 20 months before the Games start on 9th February in 2018. Building on the progress made in Rio, PyeongChang 2018 will be the first time that all IT systems will be delivered through the Cloud, radically changing the IT model for the Olympic and Paralympic Games from a 'build each time' to a 'build once' model.
To support the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are now less than four years away, Atos announced that its first team members will arrive in Japan before the end of the year and will be led by Michele Hyron. Tokyo 2020 will be Michele's 10th Olympic and Paralympic Games and her third as Chief Integrator. Michele led the Atos team in London and Rio and will bring her extensive experience to Tokyo to further drive the digital transformation of the Games to improve the experience for athletes, fans and media.
"Technology had a crucial role in the successful Rio 2016 Games, and with the use of digital technologies including cloud and data analytics, Rio 2016 represents a major breakthrough in how we will deliver moving forward," said Patrick Adiba, Group Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer and CEO for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. "By supporting the IOC and the IPC in their digital transformation, we are helping to improve the experience of all involved while reducing costs and strengthening operational performance – just as we are doing for our clients worldwide."
Paralympic events' digital engagement increases
As part of its long-term partnership with the IPC to help increase awareness and engagement with Paralympic sports, Atos has delivered to the IPC first proof of value using the Atos Codex Analytics solution for the acquisition, processing and analysis of social network and sports data. The integrated platform combines social media sentiment with sports analytics to help further strengthen the IPC's digital media communications program. It identifies trending topics which are of interest to Paralympic sports fans and links these topics to new insights derived from historical and live competition data to support the editorial team in writing news stories.
"We are continuously looking for new engaging ways to encourage more fans for the world of Para sports," said Xavier Gonzalez, IPC's Chief Executive Officer. "Atos is one of our long term partners and we are looking forward to exploring further new innovations together in the future."
