ATK's Third Stage Rocket Motor (TSRM) Supports Successful Missile Defense Test
TSRM Dual-Pulse Rocket Motor Provides Critical Capability and Mission Flexibility for the Standard Missile (SM-3) Interceptor
ATK's Innovative TSRM Propulsion System Helps Move SM-3 Block IB Missile Closer to Operational Readiness
ARLINGTON, Va., June 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ATK (NYSE: ATK), the nation's leading solid rocket motor producer, provided a key component for the most recent successful Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System test of a Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) Block IB. The test was held over the Pacific Ocean on June 26, 2012.
ATK supplies the Third Stage Rocket Motor (TSRM) to Raytheon Company, the prime contractor for the SM-3. The TSRM is a dual-pulse propulsion system with thrust vector control and an integral attitude control system. This unique combination of subsystems provides the SM-3 with the flexibility to address a broad range of threats and helps to minimize end-game maneuvering by the kinetic warhead.
"We are excited for the success of this important test flight and the performance of our TSRM propulsion system," said Cary Ralston, Vice President and General Manager of ATK's Missile Products division. "We are proud to be part of a great missile defense team, and look forward to applying our unique technical expertise for current and future versions of this critical national capability."
ATK manufactures the TSRM at its Elkton, Md. facility and has produced more than 160 TSRMs for the SM-3 program. ATK also manufactures the Solid Divert and Attitude Control System (SDACS) for the SM-3 Block IA missile.
