NEW YORK, Sept. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --- Basketball stars Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets and Ronnie Brewer of the Chicago Bulls are joining forces with The Rogosin Institute to get the word out about three of the most prevalent health problems of Americans: diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity – and the risks that they pose for kidney disease. Kidney disease affects an estimated 11.5 percent of Americans, with more than 527,000 people having such little kidney function that they require dialysis three times a week to stay alive.*
Humphries and Brewer appear in public service announcements that are part of The Rogosin Institute's All the Right Moves Good Health Initiative. The program is designed to help people avoid the risk factors for kidney disease with lifestyle changes and screenings for early detection. Information to stay healthy can be found at www.rogosin.org\goodhealth.
"An important aspect of the program is taking the first step to prevent disease," said Humphries. "Just like the steps you take to be a good athlete, there are things you can do to be healthy, like eating better, exercising and being screened for conditions that can become serious later."
Ronnie Brewer has seen friends and relatives suffer from diseases that could have been avoided. "If I can convince just a few people to change their eating and exercise habits and get checked out by their doctors, I feel like I've really made a difference," he said. "I watched my grandmother suffer from diabetes. It's hard to watch someone you love suffer from something that might be prevented."
"The Rogosin Institute is committed to reaching out to individuals and communities to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage early testing and management of detected problems, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity," said Barry Smith, M.D., Director of The Rogosin Institute. "The best way to deal with kidney disease is to prevent it altogether or treat it early. This program to raise awareness of some of the causes of kidney disease is one way for us to reach people at risk for future complications."
The Rogosin Institute is an independent not-for-profit treatment, research, and public health education center that has been providing care to patients for over five decades. Rogosin is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College and is a member of NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.
