ATF Reminds Public That Celebratory Gunfire is Against the Law
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- John A. Torres, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Los Angeles Field Division, wishes a happy New Year to Americans and asks the public to refrain from celebratory gunfire and the use of illegal fireworks while welcoming the New Year.
Celebratory gunfire is dangerous and against the law. Discharging a firearm into the air is a crime and can lead to felony charges under California state law or federal charges if the person is prohibited from possessing a firearm. Torres is proud to announce celebratory gunfire has progressively been decreasing with each New Year.
"Celebratory gunfire is a lose-lose situation," said Torres. "Every bullet fired into the air has the potential to take an innocent life, as well as lead to an individual's arrest. ATF encourages the public to celebrate the coming of this New Year with public safety in mind and not partake in indiscriminate gunfire."
Furthermore, Torres stresses the danger of the use of illegal fireworks. Fireworks that have not met safety standards can be fatal if used by an individual, he said. Federally banned fireworks include M-80s, M-100s, Silver Salutes and Cherry Bombs.
"ATF will work closely with state and local law enforcement to guarantee the public's safety and prosecute individuals in possession of illegal fireworks or practice illegal celebratory gunfire," Torres added.
If residents observe anyone shooting a gun into the air or using illegal fireworks, they are urged to contact their local police department immediately, or call ATF at 1-800-ATF-GUNS (800 283-4867).
