ATA Safety Management Council Steering Committee Meets
New National Chairman Joe Smith Presides Over Critical Safety Discussion
ARLINGTON, Va., April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, members of American Trucking Associations' Safety Management Council began meeting here to discuss a myriad of important safety issues facing the trucking industry.
"Safety is the highest priority of ATA, and the professionals who make up SMC are quite literally on the ground making sure that our fleets are as safe as they can possibly be," SMC Executive Director Brian Lagana said before the SMC Steering Committee meeting began.
The meeting, held here April 1-3, is the first presided over by new SMC National Chairman Joe Smith, manager of fleet safety, risk management at Kenco Group. Smith was elected National Chairman at the council's 2014 Safety and Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition in Orlando late last year. He has served in various SMC volunteer leadership roles over the course of many years, including committee chair, committee member and as a member of the Executive Committee.
"Meetings like this one allow professionals like me and others to learn from one another and bring those best practices back to our fleets," Smith said. "It is always a rewarding experience to be a part of these meetings, but I am tremendously humbled to be SMC's national chairman."
Smith has been with Kenco since 2006, and has been active on the Safety Management Council for the past decade.
Among the topics of discussion at this year's meeting are: the latest in hazardous materials transport regulation, occupational safety and health issues, driver recruitment and retention and risk management.
