At-Risk Youth Across St. Croix Desperately Need Help This Holiday Season
NEW YORK, Dec. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As Christmas approaches, almost three months after Hurricane Maria devastated St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, many at-risk youth across the island are unsure there is anything to celebrate this year.
For the first time, many are sharing their personal stories of struggle this holiday through an amazing video you can view here. Many are still dealing with the physical and psychological trauma the hurricane's deconstruction has wrought on them and their families, including living in the dark, having no home and struggling daily for the basic necessities – food and water.
The one bright hope this holiday remains the St. Croix-based, (501(c) (3) non-profit, Project Promise (PP). Since 2014, Project Promise has been helping many at-risk youth across the island through academic intervention, life coaching, personal wellness classes, cultural awareness and service learning programs as well as family support services, including healthy meals and transportation. The programs are designed to encourage participants to lead healthier and happier lives.
In the aftermath of the hurricane, Project Promise's first and foremost focus is on restoration. One of their immediate goals is to help at-risk children and their families across the island with the recovery process. They have taken on the added responsibility of helping families with their daily needs of food, water and toiletries, while also trying to rebuild after losing everything in the storm.
"We are struggling more today than before the storm to support new needs, but quitting is not an option," said Project Promise founder, Resa O'Reilly. "We are more determined and committed to helping those in need; especially the most vulnerable among us - needy children."
