At 94 years old, Astar Daniels will join David Mann, Jim Tarbell, and other notables to rappel down the 10 story Central Parkway YMCA
CINCINNATI, June 5, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over The Edge For Elders, a fundraiser coming June 12th and 13th at the Central Parkway YMCA, will feature 94-year-old Madisonville resident, Astar Daniels, rappelling off the Central Parkway YMCA in Over The Rhine. The event offers a new twist to traditional fundraisers where people sponsor Edgers who will rappel down a 10-story building! It's all part of the summer fundraiser for Affordable Senior Living by Episcopal Retirement Homes, (ERH).
Over The Edge for Elders will take place at the Central Parkway YMCA at the corner of Elm Street and Central Parkway, where the top six floors are being renovated by ERH into 65 apartments for older adults with limited incomes. "America's YMCAs used to be one of the biggest lodgers in the country with thousands of folks staying there on any given night." says Kathy Ison-Lind, Vice President for Affordable Living at ERH. "Most of that space now sits idle and this is an innovative way to re-purpose those rooms into apartments to meet an exploding need for affordable senior housing."
The two-day occasion kicks off at the Central Parkway YMCA June 12th with CELEBRATE! — ERH's annual fundraising BBQ dinner, and auction – where 10 celebrity Edgers will rappel to get the action started. Ms. Daniels will be rappelling with Channel 5's Kristy Davis that evening. Other well-known supporters rappelling that night include Vice Mayor David Mann, former vice-mayor and OTR supporter Jim Tarbell, and The Reverend Canon John Koepke from the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. The next day, June 13th over 75 more Edgers are expected to rappel the 10-story historic building to help raise money for affordable senior housing where deserving older adults can live with dignity in a secure and enriching community.
"I've traveled the Nile, I climbed the pyramids, the Lord has just blessed me with so much...and now He has blessed me with the opportunity to raise money for Affordable Living," said Astar Daniels, who lives in ERH's St. Paul Village on Madison Road. "I prayed for an opportunity like this."
The presenting sponsor for the event is US Bank, the lead sponsor is the Model Group and the building sponsor is the Central Parkway YMCA.
