At 12:01 AM, 92Y Announces $1M "First Gift" Of #GivingTuesday
NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- At 12:01 AM today – #GivingTuesday – Stuart Ellman and Tom Kaplan, President and Chairman of the 92Y Board of Directors, announced that 92Y has secured $1 million in special contributions to mark the third annual #GivingTuesday, an initiative launched by 92Y in 2012. The gift, contributed by a group of over twenty lay leaders, represents new, additional funds dedicated to supporting the work of 92Y. It recognizes the organization's role in establishing "#GivingTuesday" a day dedicated to community and philanthropy, falling on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Today, more than 20,000 organizations around the country have joined 92Y in rallying people everywhere to support the causes they believe in by donating funds, time and expertise. #GivingTuesday has been recognized by President Obama as a day that demonstrates "the enormous potential we have to leave an enduring mark not only in our communities but around the world."
"I want to thank all of my colleagues who have contributed to this $1M gift," said Thomas S. Kaplan, Chairman of 92Y's Board of Directors, "and who have made it possible for us to lead by example – to encourage people everywhere to support the causes and organizations they believe in on this #GivingTuesday. With this gift, we establish our own 'matching' fund and challenge our community to join us in supporting 92Y, an organization whose impact is seen today in the thousands of children touched by 92Y's educational outreach programs; children and adults who benefit from 92Y's scholarship programs; and families who find a welcoming, joyous home at 92Y. We are very proud to support 92Y on this #GivingTuesday – a day that is, like 92Y, deeply rooted in the Jewish values of community and compassion."
"At 92Y, we are always reimagining our core values for a new time and a new generation," said Stuart Ellman, 92Y's Board President. "That has been the key to our longevity, and it remains critical to sustaining 92Y for future generations. Initiatives like #GivingTuesday harness new technologies for the greater good, and make our values relevant and meaningful for a globally connected generation. We are so proud of 92Y's leadership on this initiative; #GivingTuesday has indeed sparked a global conversation about giving, reaching far beyond our initial expectations."
