ASTM International Helps Organize U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day
ASTM International is serving as the 2016 Administering Organization for the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day on Oct. 27. The event recognizes the critical role of stakeholders throughout the standards community, including business leaders, industry, academia, government, and consumers. The celebration includes an exhibition, reception, and dinner.
President James A. Thomas to Receive Ron Brown Award
James "Jim" Thomas, president, ASTM International, will receive the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award during the Oct. 27 dinner at the Fairmount Hotel. Named for the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the award recognizes leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade. Thomas was nominated for his many contributions to standards development over the course of a 40-year career at ASTM International. This includes serving for nearly a decade on the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Directors.
Kathie Morgan, executive vice president, will serve as master of ceremonies for the dinner. She will become president upon Thomas' retirement early next year.
Flagship Magazine Honored with ANSI President's Award for Journalism
The writing staff of ASTM International's magazine, Standardization News, will be given the ANSI President's Award for Journalism, which honors journalists whose work illuminates the role that standardization and conformity assessment activities play in the global marketplace. Nominator Mary McKiel noted how the staff is "always working with the broad ASTM international community to ensure the relevance and timeliness of articles."
The honorees include editor-in-chief Maryann Gorman, associate editor Cicely Enright, and contributing writers Richard Wilhelm and Daniel Bergels. Gorman will accept the award at the ANSI Awards Banquet and Ceremony Oct. 26.
ASTM Debuts Consumer-Oriented Animated Video
This week, ASTM International and several of its high-profile members debut a "Sports and Leisure Time" animated video (watch it here) showcasing the many ways that safety and performance standards impact consumers lives year-round.
