CONCORD, Calif., June 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- AssetMark, Inc., a leading strategic provider of innovative investment and consulting solutions serving independent financial advisors, held its inaugural Purpose-Based Planning™ Workshop this week in New York City. The two-day interactive event used life transition surveys, goal setting insights, retirement perspective exercises and other tools to provide new insights to advisors looking to deepen client relationships through "purpose".
Also referred to as "financial life planning," purpose-based planning approaches wealth management in the context of a client's overall life goals and values. Traditional financial advisors work with clients to generate investment returns based on goals such as maintaining their current lifestyles in retirement. Purpose-based planning broadens the conversation to include financial life management, and positions advisors as ongoing partners in helping align financial portfolios to the client's values, priorities and goals.
"Advisors who adopt a purpose-based planning approach enjoy much deeper relationships with their clients," said Matt Matrisian, SVP and Director of Practice Management for AssetMark, Inc. "When an advisor helps a client articulate a clear vision that reflects his or her deeply held values, and creates a financial plan that provides the option of living a more meaningful life, that advisor becomes an irreplaceable partner."
Financial advisor Joe DiSalvo, ChFC, President of Quest Capital & Risk Management, Inc. in New York, attended the event and echoed the sentiments expressed by Mr. Matrisian. "Purpose-based planning is about creating an environment where you have a really rich, meaningful and deep discussion with your clients. You help them raise their awareness around their true goals that motivate them. You become a facilitator and a change agent in a really meaningful way."
AssetMark's Purpose-Based Planning Workshop featured resources from Money Quotient, a non-profit organization that develops financial life planning tools and training for financial professionals. Presentations and exercises focused on topics including:
- Understanding a client's true emotions, motivations and goals around money
- Communicating financial advice in a way that leads to action and commitment
- Marketing yourself as a resource for managing money purposefully
- Crafting client meetings to help clients plan with purpose
"The Purpose-Based Planning Workshop gives advisors the tools and knowledge to change their conversations with clients for the better – and is just one component of AssetMark's broader approach to empowering advisors and their clients to invest with purpose," said Mr. Matrisian. "We also deliver investment solutions and philanthropic support that enable advisors to align every aspect of their clients' financial lives with their individual goals and values."
"We will be rolling out a Donor-Advised Fund investment solution and socially responsible investment strategies later this year," said Mr. Matrisian. "We are looking to support advisors across many dimensions so they can help clients translate their investments into what purpose means to them individually."
