AspireAssist® receives reimbursement in Blekinge, Sweden
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Oct. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Aspire Bariatrics Inc. announced today that the county of Blekinge, Sweden will reimburse for the AspireAssist® procedure, an endoscopic alternative to weight loss surgery. The procedure will now be offered as a covered treatment option for obesity alongside bariatric surgery.
"With only 1% of the eligible obese population choosing bariatric surgery, it is vital to offer these patients viable alternatives," said Henrik Forssell, MD, a surgeon at Blekinge County Hospital in Karlskona, Sweden and an investigator in two clinical trials involving the AspireAssist. "The AspireAssist has demonstrated comparable weight loss to bariatric surgery, but with far fewer complications and high patient satisfaction."
"Reimbursement by Blekinge, Sweden is the first step towards Aspire's goal of receiving reimbursement in Sweden, and ultimately all of Europe," said Kathy Crothall, President & CEO of Aspire Bariatrics. "The comparative lower cost of the AspireAssist procedure, coupled with its excellent safety profile, should hopefully pave the way for reimbursement throughout the European Union."
The AspireAssist received the CE Mark in 2012 and is now in use in Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, and Austria. The device provides a novel approach to obesity treatment through portion control and intake modulation. The device is implanted in a 15-minute outpatient procedure, is fully reversible, and does not alter the patient's internal anatomy.
