MATERIALS PARK, Ohio, Sept. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ASM International, the world's largest association of metals-centric materials engineers and scientists, will be host to Student Materials Camps as well as the second annual ASM Geodesic Dome Design Competition, "DomesDay," during the upcoming Materials Science and Technology (MS&T) Conference in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 6-7. Both programs are designed to engage and inspire the future generation of materials science leaders.
The Student Materials Camps will bring approximately 300 Columbus-area high school students to the Greater Columbus Convention Center to participate in hands-on experiments teaching applied math and science principles. Schools participating include: Berwick Alternative K-8, Linden-McKinley STEM, Westerville South High School, Indian Lake High School, Beechcroft High School, Upper Arlington High School, Columbus Downtown High School, Tolles Career and Technical Center, and Columbus Global Academy.
DomesDay will feature teams of students building geodesic domes that will be judged on three criteria: aesthetics, mechanical strength and an elevator pitch. Participating schools include: Alfred University, Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve University, Clemson University, Drexel University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Connecticut and Virginia Tech.
"ASM is committed to not only engaging working professionals in our industry but also to inspiring our next generation of leaders. Both our student camps and DomesDay competition are fun ways for students to experience materials science," said Terry Mosier, ASM Managing Director. "Our Student Materials Camps have been inspiring students for years and we are excited to be bringing back our DomesDay competition for a second time after being well received last year."
The Materials Science and Technology Conference brings together scientists, engineers, students, suppliers and more to discuss current research and technical applications to shape the future of material science and technology. To learn more about MS&T, visit: www.matscitech.org.
