ruby agrees to pay civil restitution; company says settlements signal new future
TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ - ruby, the company that owns online dating site Ashley Madison, has reached settlements with the United States Federal Trade Commission and with each of the State Attorneys-General who were participating in the investigation.
As part of these settlements, ruby has paid aggregate civil restitution of US $1,657,000 (half of which was paid to the FTC and half of which was paid to the various states participating in the settlement). In addition, ruby has agreed to maintain a comprehensive information security program and refrain from past business practices that may have allegedly been misleading to consumers. As the settlements expressly state: ruby neither admits nor denies the allegations made by the FTC and the State Attorneys-General.
Pivotal Day
"Today is a pivotal day for our members and for Ashley Madison," says Rob Segal, newly appointed CEO of ruby. According to Segal, the company has been cooperating fully with the FTC for more than a year. "Today's settlement closes an important chapter on the company's past and reinforces our commitment to operating with integrity and to building a new future for our members, our team and our company," says Segal.
Segal took the helm of ruby in mid-April and announced a total repositioning and rebranding in July. "Our team is making significant, long-term investments in our people, processes and systems to improve Ashley Madison for our members," he says.
According to newly appointed President James Millership, the company has already implemented many new business practices and security improvements in the past 18 months. "Today's news reflects that the company has proactively made important, transformative changes since last year -- and is committed to open, transparent communication," he says.
