Ascension Orthopedics Implants PyroTITAN™ in Geelong, Australia
AUSTIN, Texas, June 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ascension Orthopedics, Inc., the world leader in PyroCarbon orthopedic implants, announces the implantation of the PyroTITAN™ Humeral Resurfacing Implant in Geelong, Australia by Richard S. Page, MB.BS.FRACS(ORTH) at St. John of God Hospital.
"The patient was a 57-year-old, active male with increasing shoulder pain for over a year. This was exacerbated by a fall from a mountain bike and not improved by a full range of non-surgical measures. His range of motion was notably increasing with worsening pain on activity, including in his line of employment. An MRI had shown a healed posterior rim fracture with quite advanced degenerative changes and cartilage loss on both sides of the joint. An attempted arthroscopic debridement did not provide lasting benefit, so after several consultations, the patient elected to proceed with a shoulder arthroplasty," stated Dr. Page. "The PyroTITAN PyroCarbon resurfacing implant appealed to the patient as a less invasive option than a standard total shoulder replacement. Resurfacing avoids the need for a stem down the humeral canal or a glenoid replacement, and the PyroCarbon material shows favourable wear resistance and biocompatibility against cartilage and bone in hemiarthroplasty. At three month follow-up, the patient was delighted with the pain relief and early return to function. Follow-up for the life of the prosthesis is ongoing."
"The first PyroCarbon resurfacing device was implanted in December 2009," commented Guy Mayer, President and CEO of Ascension Orthopedics. "We are pleased with the clinical results to date. Expanding its use to new centers will support the benefits of PyroCarbon in hemiarthroplasty."
