SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ARUP Laboratories' pathologist, Ronald L. Weiss, MD, MBA, FCAP, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists at CAP '11, the organization's annual meeting, held this year in Grapevine, Texas. According to the CAP, the award honors members "who have made a broad and positive impact on patient care through the specialty of pathology."

Dr. Weiss is a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and currently serves as a staff hematopathologist at ARUP with service responsibilities in the Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory and the Hematopathology Consultation Service. He has served in various management positions at ARUP, including president/chief operating officer and chief medical officer/director of laboratories. Dr. Weiss is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty certification in hematology and medical microbiology. His professional interests are in health policy, laboratory management and administration, including the role of the laboratory in protecting patient safety.

Weiss received his MD from the Creighton University School of Medicine. He trained in anatomic and clinical pathology and completed a fellowship in medical microbiology at the University of Utah before joining the Department of Pathology faculty in 1986.
He has been an active member of the CAP for more than a quarter of a century, serving on numerous committees and workgroups including the Laboratory Fiscal Management Committee and the Economic Affairs Committee.
