Arts on the Square - Waupaca's Week-long Celebration of the Arts
WAUPACA, Wis., July 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Waupaca Community Arts Board is hosting its 12th annual "Arts on the Square" weeklong event, August 12-18 in downtown Waupaca. This eclectic festival has grown exponentially over the years. Highlights include "Wautopia," ARTicipation Week, Friday Night Street Dance and Saturday's Arts on the Square.
You are invited to take part in the grand opening of WAUTOPIA Sunday, August 12th, 3-5pm on Session Street. This spectacular architectural display, created solely by human power and collective endeavor, is a 25' high sculpture fashioned and sponsored by local organizations and businesses. The sculpture will house many events the entire week leading up to Arts on the Square, including music, drama, art, writing, Qi Gong, Yoga, story hour, lunch and lean, Tai Chi, cardio drumming, sidewalk chalk contest, middle school band, drum circle and more. Events in "Wautopia" coincide with ARTicipation Week (August 12-18). Several venues throughout town will hold live music. The Phantam Art Gallery will host The Band Orphans Sunday from 5:30-7pm, T-Dubs will host Miss Molly on Monday from 7-10pm, Del Weed and His Sweet Rollers will perform at Little Fat Gretchen's on Tuesday from 7-10pm, Pupy Costello and the New Hiram Kings will be featured at South Park's Summer Night series at 7pm, along with a family art project starting at 6pm, the Alex Wilson band will be at Simpson's on Thursday from 7-10pm. Waupaca King and In-Between Retailers Chalk-o-the Town competition starts on Sunday with judging to happen on Thursday. Watch all week as art appears on the sidewalks!
The week culminates with the Friday Night Street Dance, August 17 and Saturday's full on arts festival. The Friday night street dance features Hip Pocket, a powerful band with striking lead and harmony vocals and a blazing four-piece horn section that will keep you dancing from 7-10pm. Fire spinners perform during the band break.
Saturday's Arts on the Square highlights over 40 juried fine artists selling their wares. There will be interactive art workshops, including clay, children's art, screen printing, woodcarvers, festival dreads, glassblowing and face painting. There are 11 bands on 3 music stages: the Main Stage, Jazz Stage and new this year: the Down Under Stage in Rotary Park with music and emerging artist displays.
