Article One Partners Presents Four Intellectual Ventures Patents for Latest Invalidity Studies
Article One to reward researchers for prior art related to Intellectual Ventures patent assertions against major security software and semiconductor companies
NEW YORK, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Article One Partners today announced that it has launched four new requests for research of patents held by Intellectual Ventures. These Patent Studies are requests for prior art, including non-patent literature, that provides a path to invalidity. These Studies will leverage the success of Article One's global crowdsourcing community to identify evidence predating patent claims, known as "prior art."
Intellectual Ventures filed an infringement lawsuit related to these patents in December 2010 against security software companies Check Point Software Technologies, McAfee, Symantec and Trend Micro, and semiconductor companies Altera, Elpida Memory, Hynix Semiconductor, Lattice Semiconductor and Microsemi.
Article One's Patent Studies are focused on United States Patent No. 5,987,610 defined as "Computer Virus Screening Methods and Systems"; No. 6,073,142 "Automated Post Office Based Rule Analysis of E-mail Messages and Other Data Objects for Controlled Distribution in Network Environments"; No. 6,460,050 "Distributed Content Identification System"; and No. 7,506,155 "E-mail Virus Protection System and Method."
To join the search, researchers can go to the Article One Intellectual Ventures Patent Study page for instructions on how to register and submit responses.
Article One is incentivizing researchers with a reward of $5,000 U.S. per Study for the highest quality research. To date, Article One has rewarded over $1.4 million to its researchers.
Article One has conducted similar high profile requests for research, including patents held by Interval Licensing, Lodsys, MacroSolve and NTP Incorporated.
Intellectual Ventures was founded in 2000 by Nathan Myhrvold, former Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft and Edward Jung, former Chief Architect at Microsoft. Intellectual Ventures has acquired over 30,000 purchased patents and applications from third parties and has developed over 2,000 inventions.
"We have seen an increase in interest – both in number and size of companies – in leveraging the power of the crowdsourcing model to address the need for prior art," said Cheryl Milone, CEO of Article One Partners. "Article One Partners' patent studies enable the public to take action in solving a problem that eventually we all could end up paying for."
