Art Van Furniture To Hold Food Drive To Help Homeless Veterans

WARREN, Mich., Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Two western Michigan Art Van Furniture stores are planning a two week food drive to help homeless veterans in their communities. Michigan's No. 1 furniture and mattress retailer will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items, toothpaste and other essentials at their Kalamazoo and Battle Creek locations from August 15 through August 30. All items will be sorted and delivered after Labor Day to homeless veterans moving into the Silver Star II apartment complex in Battle Creek (44 Clark Street North) on September 1. 

"Our veterans fought selflessly for our country, and as Americans, we are forever indebted to them," said Gary Van Elslander, president of Art Van Furniture. "These heroes deserve our respect and heartfelt assistance, and Art Van Furniture team members are proud to be partnering with the residents of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek to make the lives of our local veterans a little easier."

Donations can be dropped off seven days a week during regular business hours at Art Van Furniture in Kalamazoo (550 Ring Road) and Battle Creek (6100 B Drive North).

Silver Star Apartments provides housing and supportive services to homeless veterans. This award-winning project was initially developed in 2009 and the following year, received the Affordable Housing Finance Readers Choice Award. Silver Star is adjacent to a Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, which provides care to 131,800 veterans.
