Art Van Furniture Donates Furniture, Mattresses And Flooring To Flood Victims And Challenges Other Companies To Help

WARREN, Mich., Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Art Van Furniture has teamed up with Focus: HOPE, the American Red Cross, Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit and ACCESS in Dearborn to assist families across southeastern Michigan whose homes were ravaged and furnishings destroyed due to the August flood disaster. Michigan's No. 1 furniture and mattress retailer is donating 300 sofas, over 200 dressers, 100 mattresses and 100 Art Van Flooring remnants valued at more than $300,000 to homeowners with limited or no resources to replace what they lost. Art Van Furniture is also challenging other Michigan businesses to join the effort to help families in dire need of other household necessities, including furnaces, water heaters and washers and dryers.

"The unexpected destruction and loss of furnishings and personal possessions caused by last month's storms has been devastating to families from Detroit to Dearborn, Warren to Southfield, and Huntington Woods to Hazel Park," said Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Art Van Furniture. "We have a responsibility to help our neighbors in need. I am issuing a personal plea to other Michigan companies to step up and donate what they can so that people adversely affected by the floods can get their homes and their lives back in order."

The almost 500 families who will benefit from the Art Van Furniture donation have already been identified by the four nonprofits. Sauder Woodworking Company, one of the retailer's vendors, is also donating more than 100 bookshelves.
