Countless times throughout these events, millions of fans will question the play-calling, the refereeing, and the judging.
For those armchair quarterbacks who express their agreement or ire from the comforts of the couch, they feel certain the world thinks as they do. But do they? Do other fans watching the event feel the same way?
Ponderoo, a social networking app available free for the iPhone and iPad, lets fans express their feelings about the play-calling, and see what other fans are feeling, based on input shared via their mobile devices.
"It's one thing to try to read a bunch of posts on Twitter," said James Dodson, one of Ponderoo's founders. "But what if you want to know what thousands of people think about that last play or the last race? With a single touch on your mobile device screen, Ponderoo lets you express your opinion in a fraction of a second, and see what all other sports fans are thinking in one quick glance."
The app lets users voice their opinion, and understand how other users are feeling, during any shared event. Besides sports events, this includes TV shows, concerts, radio broadcasts, and even lectures.
No writing is required to express one's opinion on Ponderoo. A simple tap of the mobile device screen is all that's needed. Users tap high on their screen, called a "ripple", to express a positive opinion of what's just happened. Ripple low to express a negative opinion. Users can see how their friends are rippling, as well as an aggregate of all users who are participating.
"A big part of of being a sports fan is sharing your passion with other fans, including your thoughts about plays or calls on the field. We all think we know better than the coaches or referees with years of professional experience, right?" joked Dodson.
Ponderoo, a free app available in iTunes, was developed for live social interaction scenarios, including TV, concerts, and sporting events. Ponderoo, LLC is a private start-up based in Austin, Texas.
