Arizona State University And Truepic Partner To Counter Disinformation
Arizona State University's Weaponized Narrative Initiative Deploys Truepic's Image Authentication Technology to Promote Authenticated Content Online
TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Arizona State University's Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Luminosity Lab are partnering with Truepic to counter disinformation online by capturing and sharing authenticated content ahead of the 2018 mid-term congressional elections.
By engaging the university community to document and report on political events throughout the country, the narrative initiative will be able to track verified events nationwide. Users of Truepic technology can share their authenticated images and videos publicly to disseminate authentic content as a counterweight to disinformation and fake images.
"It is incredible to watch the development and deployment of technologies that weaponize information streams to the extent that citizens, can no longer tell what is real, and what has been manufactured to mislead them. In an effort to raise awareness and stem this trend, ASU is partnering with Truepic to try to counter these attacks with authenticated images that defend rationality and transparency in yet another critical way," says Brad Allenby, Co-Director of the Weaponized Narrative Initiative.
Truepic's application allows anyone with a smartphone to capture a certified authentic image and share it online instantaneously. Truepic's solution leverages proprietary computer vision testing and machine learning to authenticate images and videos, each one with immutable references on the Blockchain. The Truepic app is free and can be found in the App Store and on Google Play.
"We believe that the ultimate solution to the crisis of disinformation will not come from one sector, but, instead, will be a whole-of-society approach, including collaboration between technologists and academia. We look forward to our partnership with Arizona State University which will no doubt help us continue innovating and developing technology to return trust in images around the world," said Jeff McGregor, CEO, Truepic.
Both ASU's Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Truepic are proud participants of the U.S. Department of State's Global Engagement Center (GEC) Tech Demo series. The Global Engagement Center is charged with leading the U.S. government's efforts to counter propaganda and disinformation from international terrorist organizations and foreign countries.
Truepic technology has been used in over 100 countries to date, including by Reddit "Ask Me Anything" moderators, who are using Truepic as public photo proof for its popular "Ask Me Anything" series; the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) using the technology to remotely monitor global projects; the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), and others.
"This partnership merges the desire for technological answers and the need to focus on the humans tangled in this disinformation landscape we are all currently swimming in," Cyndi Coon, Producing Director of the Weaponized Narrative Initiative.
