Arizona Dairy Industry Plans To Donate Nearly 15,000 Gallons Of Milk And Challenges Community To Give And Get Dairy This June
When Schools Let Out for Summer, Kids in Need in Arizona Lose Access to Nutrient-Rich Milk
PHOENIX, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Arizona Milk Producers, in partnership with United Dairymen of Arizona, Shamrock Farms and the D-backs, plan to donate nearly 15,000 gallons of milk to families in need through the Great American Milk Drive, and Arizonans can ensure this happens by participating in June Dairy Month activities. United Dairymen of Arizona will once again be making a large donation of more than 13,000 gallons of milk, which makes their total donation to Arizona food banks more than 25,000 gallons in two years.
The month-long celebration includes in-game support at a D-backs game, an online activation for consumers, and opportunities for Arizonans to donate directly to the Great American Milk Drive as well as receive education about local dairy farming on social media.
Milk is one of the most requested items by food bank clients year-round, and especially during the summer when kids are missing out on nutritious meals provided through school breakfast and lunch programs.
"Hungry families in Arizona are missing out on nutrient-rich milk because it's not typically donated to food banks, even though it's in high demand," said Melissa Forrester, United Food Bank community outreach coordinator. "Most people don't realize how challenging it is to get milk into our food bank. We're hopeful this program will increase awareness and inspire people to take action."
United Food Bank is one of the four Feeding America food banks that will benefit from Arizona Milk Producers June Dairy Month program.
The D-backs will support the program at their Saturday, June 20 game vs. the Padres, where Shamrock Farms will donate 10 gallons of milk to The Great American Milk Drive for every baseball hit or run scored by our hometown team. And for every homerun, the local dairy will donate 100 gallons of milk (up to 500 gallons total). United Dairymen of Arizona will match every gallon of milk Shamrock Farms donates for this game. In addition, buy-one give-one Shamrock Farms milk coupons will be distributed at the Arizona Milk Producers booth inside Chase Field.
Also as part of the program, Arizonans will be invited to make their own milk donation to The Great American Milk Drive, which makes it easy to donate milk to food insecure families in our community. Donating will be as easy as visiting milklife.com/give where a donation of as little as $5 will deliver a gallon of milk to a local family through Feeding America.
