Are You Among 85 Percent of Americans Woefully Unprepared For Disaster?
Points of Light Retains TransMedia To Raise Preparedness To Higher Levels
WELLINGTON, Fla., June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, founded by President George H.W. Bush, has retained TransMedia Group to spread its life-saving disaster preparedness message locally (www.goodandready.org).
Specifically, TransMedia will generate publicity designed to drive public attendance at the free PBC Disaster Preparedness Event 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at The Mall at Wellington Green. The event is part of The Allstate Foundation and Points of Light Disaster Preparedness Tour and Education Campaign targeting 14 cities nationwide.
"Our role will be to build awareness of the Mall event, break through apathy often hovering dangerously over disaster preparedness and help educate local residents about its life-saving importance, especially now in hurricane season," said Tom Madden, CEO of TransMedia Group. (www.transmediagroup.com).
"Part of our publicity for Points of Light will be to awaken the public to such startling facts that since 1980, the occurrence of weather related disasters has increased by more than 230 percent," said Madden. "Meanwhile 85 percent of Americans are regrettably unprepared and 62 percent lack any type of emergency kit."
TransMedia's PR plan involves arranging for Points of Light disaster experts to appear on local radio and television programs to give potentially life-saving tips and recommend actions that should be taken now, including building a free disaster kit at the Mall event.
Residents also can access information and free resources to help better prepare themselves and their families for hurricanes and other potential disasters at an educational website created by Points of Light for that purpose at www.goodandready.org.
Community volunteers with the United Way of Palm Beach County and Allstate agency owners will be working side-by-side at the Mall event to help hundreds of Palm Beach County residents to build a free disaster kit they can use to keep safe in the event of a disaster or unforeseen emergency. The free kits include a hand-crank flashlight, first aid kit, cleaning supplies and other items proven to keep people safe and prepared.
Photo and video opportunities of residents preparing disaster kits and learning about the importance of disaster preparation will be available at the event on Saturday as well as interviews with disaster preparedness experts leading up to the event.
