LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., Aug. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- ADC's retail design studio is expanding across the country as the trend of elevating malls beyond the role of purely shopping to a new urban escape continues to grow. Shopping centers are coming to play a greater role in the cultural life of their surrounding communities. The firm is winning national and international recognition because of their knowledge and ingenuity in retail shopping experience by creating activation nodes, resting pods, and food halls.
LIT Design Awards has honored Architecture Design Collaborative with 2 Lighting Designer of the Year 2017 awards, Architizer A+Awards has awarded a Special Mention - Shopping Center, and IDA has awarded Honorable Mention for the renovation of Perimeter Mall in Atlanta, Georgia. Led by Craig Chinn, AIA and Alexandra Gomez, the objective of this project was to transform a traditional interior mall into the feeling of an outdoor shopping destination by transforming storefronts through architectural changes and designing custom lighting and furniture. The firm was presented the challenges of illuminating dark corridors while providing a memorable experience. The inspiration and objective of the first project quickly became a light diffusing system that would mimic that of sprinkled light particles found in clouds and illuminate the space. The Cloud's nebulous form was configured through a series of translucent panels in combination with linear light fixtures precisely placed, performing a cascading light effect designed to achieve the rather organic structure. The slight variations on the panels were custom designed and fabricated with a signature transparency that would interact with the linear LED fixture to diffuse light and resemble natural clouds. As you walk through the space the cloud moves as you move.
Another challenge with the Perimeter Mall rejuvenation was to design a creative light source through readily available products that would be attractive in design while providing little to no customization in production. "The Wave" is a light sculpture providing a gentle wave-like experience through its illumination contributing to the feeling of an outdoor shopping destination in an indoor space. The centerpiece was developed through the use of forty linear light fixtures suspended at alternating heights, each centered on its axis in a series of rhythmic undulating movements.
"ADC works collaboratively with our clients, our vendors, our design team, and others working on the project to conceive all of our designs. The Perimeter lighting was no exception. It took the whole team working together to create the distinctive lighting for this Mall," says Craig Chinn AIA, Principal at Architecture Design Collaborative.
Architecture Design Collaborative received the prestigious Coverings CID Award for Commercial Tile Design for the renovation at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Alabama. The project team of Craig Chinn, AIA and Alexandra Gomez developed creative solutions to address the mall's eccentric floor plan, to create seamless transitions to anchor tenants and other wings. Anchor tenant entrances are accented with a gradient pattern of tile, providing a transitional space. Twelve different tiles were selected from American Import Tiles and used to create a cohesive project. Unpolished tile is used on the lower level with polished tiles on the upper level for visual interest with variations of light. The center court area is highlighted with a woven tile accent band to distinguish the food court seating area from the pedestrian circulation. The award celebrated a successful design solution in the renovation of Alabama's largest mall.
