In an effort to discuss and solve issues related specifically to karst, ARCADIS groundwater experts David Lipson and Keith White will moderate "Contaminant Hydrogeology of Karst" on the opening day of the conference. The half-day session includes the presentation of 13 papers regarding characterization, modeling and remediation of groundwater derived from karst environments.
"Groundwater scientists have successfully remediated pollution plumes in a variety of complicated geologic settings, and karst is the next frontier," said David Lipson, Principal Hydrogeologist for ARCADIS U.S. "The knowledge that we share and gain during the topical session will enable ARCADIS to continue providing our clients with the technical resources and leadership needed to tackle their most difficult karst problems."
More than 25 percent of the world's population depends on groundwater derived from karst environments – areas that include natural features like caves, springs and sinkholes. Because of their complex geology, karst settings are some of the most challenging landscapes for groundwater scientists to remediate.
Lipson and White submitted the concept of "Contaminant Hydrogeology of Karst" to GSA after recognizing a lack of organized knowledge on the subject. The session works to fill that gap, by bringing together professionals who are actively involved in refining best practices for the cleanup of karst groundwater.
"We hope the topical session will be a launching point for a more detailed study into karst and a catalyst for further research and practical application," said Lipson.
