"Arab Capital of Culture 2012" Kicks off Tomorrow in Bahrain
MANAMA, Bahrain, Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A year of hosting cultural symposiums, shows, and fairs for the "Arab Capital of Culture 2012" is set to begin tomorrow in Manama with a series of three art exhibitions.
A spokesperson in Bahrain's Ministry of Culture noted that Manama deserves to celebrate its culture, people and history and that the honor allows Bahrain to carry all aspects of its culture to the world.
The first events of the year feature paintings, media and sculptural works from Arab artists, including generations of Jordanian pieces and an exhibition of art from the Arab World Institute. The series continues with the 5th Bahrain International Sculpture Symposium, an open-air workshop where viewers can see natural marble sculptures from 16 Arab artists.
The Ministry spokesperson noted that designating Manama as the "Capital of Arab Culture" is not just a description for one year. Rather, he said, it is an attribute that will remain across the land forever.
The exhibitions will be open to the public at the Bahrain National Museum until January 31. Further celebrations will continue throughout the year with the Bahrain International Book Fair in March, the 20th Heritage Festive in April, as well as various other events exploring Bahrain's history.
The Arab Capital of Culture is a UNESCO program carried out by the Arab League to promote Arab culture and history.
