Aptilo Networks Enabling Wi-Fi Offload for World Cup 2014 in Brazil
STOCKHOLM, June 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Anticipating a surge of user activity surrounding 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, three operators in Brazil are working with Aptilo Networks, the leading provider of mobile data offloading solutions, to enable Wi-Fi offloading and carrier Wi-Fi throughout the country and in Maracanã Stadium - the venue for the World Cup Final -- for the millions of guests expected to attend this global sporting event.

TIM Brasil and Oi SA (NYSE: OIBR), two of the largest mobile operators in Brazil, are using the Aptilo Service Management Platform™ (SMP) to provide a carrier Wi-Fi service with mobile data offloading. Aptilo is also enabling carrier Wi-Fi services for Linktel, which operates the largest independent network of hotspots in Brazil.
"Large-scale sporting events represent a significant opportunity for carriers to generate revenue and increase branding with Wi-Fi offloading," said Jonas Jacobsson, VP Sales Americas, Aptilo Networks. "Brazil will be host to some of the most exciting, highly anticipated sporting events, and Aptilo will be working with operators to leverage these opportunities, manage data traffic and ensure a great Wi-Fi user experience."
TIM Brasil and Oi will use Aptilo SMP to offload users from their mobile data networks to a carrier-class Wi-Fi network. This decreases 3G congestion, enabling faster data speeds. Users also enjoy a secure, "invisible" handoff from 3G to Wi-Fi with Aptilo SIM Authentication, which authenticates users via the SIM card in their mobile device.
For Linktel, Aptilo SMP will enable and manage mobile data services across Linktel's network of Wi-Fi hotspots across 2,300 access points.
With Aptilo SMP, operators can create custom-branded Wi-Fi portals for site- and event-specific advertising and marketing initiatives. "Wi-Fi landing pages, login pages and advertising can be branded to reflect the venue, teams, sporting events, even sponsors," said Jacobsson. "Mobile operators can use these branded opportunities to reach guests in a unique and memorable way. They can also leverage them as business-to-business sales opportunities."
