Apps Embrace Physical Web to Transform Proximity Marketing
NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Restaurant and retail shoppers will soon see additional value from downloaded mobile apps thanks to new technology that allows Eddystone™-URL beacons to broadcast a unique URL, which is universally visible to Physical Web browsers while simultaneously showing private content to mobile apps.
The rollout of a Physical Web Software Development Kit (SDK) from PHY.net is poised to transform proximity marketing by allowing apps to tap into the Physical Web's universe of direct-access content. It also enhances the Physical Web experience with personalization, security from malicious websites, and superior analytics.
Over the past two years, Apple's iBeacon™ protocol has dominated proximity marketing. While iBeacon is effective, beacon administration is complex and costly, and content is typically available only to users of a specific app.
The Physical Web, championed by Google under the Eddystone-URL protocol, offers an alternative beacon engagement model that makes content universally available. Location-based content presented as URLs offer the familiar browser as the user interface. This model benefits consumers by putting them in control of content selection. For marketers, the Physical Web simplifies content creation, but until now it lacked iBeacon's ability to deliver personalized content or capture powerful metrics.
The new SDK, developed by BKON Connect, Inc. for PHY.net, is a game-changing breakthrough. The Physical Web's model of direct interaction is the way of the future, and the SDK allows that interaction to happen in-app, thus enhancing apps by extending access to a dynamic new body of content. The SDK works in conjunction with PHY.net's market-leading Physical Web platform, which already has users in more than 40 countries.
"By incorporating our SDK into their mobile apps, marketers can deliver content in ways previously impossible," said PHY.net CEO Richard Graves. "Each beacon can have a public URL for users of Physical Web browsers such as Chrome and a private URL for app users, so marketers, restaurants, and retailers can incentivize premium experiences through existing apps. In fact, every authorized app can reflect a unique destination URL managed through the PHY.net platform via dashboard, schedule or API."
This innovative technology, part of BKON's drive to simplify proximity marketing, will bring about a dramatic reduction in beacon deployment costs, simpler content administration, better opportunities for cross-promotions, and a platform designed for the long term with a roadmap to incorporate alternate proximity technologies such as mDNS and NFC.
