"The Science & Leadership Symposium Class of 2016 will continue to advance the understanding of women's heart health in their communities and on the national stage," said Mary McGowan, Chief Executive Officer of WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. "The women who apply to this program are living with heart disease and yet have made a conscious decision and selfless commitment to empower other women to live heart healthy lives by becoming WomenHeart Champions and establishing a WomenHeart Support Network at a National Hospital Alliance member hospital."
WomenHeart's National Hospital Alliance is a partnership that seeks to ensure that women heart disease patients in every community have access to information, education and patient support services. By joining the Alliance, your hospital will have access to educational materials and programs developed by the nation's medical leaders in women's heart health, as well as training and technical assistance required to establish and maintain a post-discharge Support Network for women heart patients. Alliance members are also offered media, co-branding and continuing education opportunities. Find out more about WomenHeart's National Hospital Alliance on our website and by watching our National Hospital Alliance video.
Every year, WomenHeart selects up to two women heart disease survivors from each National Hospital Alliance member hospital to attend the Science & Leadership Symposium. They return to their community as WomenHeart Champions. WomenHeart Champions are volunteer community educators, national spokespersons and advocates for women living with heart disease. They are available to speak to community, state, and national audiences about the prevalence of heart disease in women and how it is so often underdiagnosed and mistreated. Learn more about WomenHeart Champions here.
Some WomenHeart Champions receive additional training at the Science & Leadership Symposium so they can become Support Network Coordinators and lead a WomenHeart Support Network at their hospital for other women living with heart disease. WomenHeart currently boasts 749 WomenHeart Champions in 49 states and 110 WomenHeart Support Networks that reach more than 10,000 women heart patients nationwide every year.
