Applications Now Available for 2012 Nature Hills Nursery Green America Awards

OMAHA, Neb., April 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Local community gardens and community "greening" projects can win up to $2,000 in plants in the 2012 Nature Hills Nursery Green America Awards.

The Green America Awards honor community groups, nonprofit groups and other organizations that are literally "greening" their communities, parks, schools and public spaces by planting trees, shrubs and other plants. The award program is sponsored by Omaha-based Nature Hills Nursery, the largest online nursery and garden center in the United States with more than 10,000 products available for direct shipping to consumers.

Applications for the 2012 Nature Hills Nursery Green America Awards are now available online at http://www.naturehills.com/green_america_awards.aspx. Applicants can also visit the Nature Hills Nursery Facebook page to apply for the Green America Awards. The deadline for applications is June 17, 2012.

Eight semi-finalists will be chosen from all the applicants to compete for prizes in the 2012 Green America Awards. The actual winners will be determined by votes on the Nature Hills Nursery Facebook page. The voting will proceed in a series of head-to-head contests between pairs of semi-finalists. The winner in each head-to-head vote will advance to the next round. (Similar to the way college basketball teams advance to the next round in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.)

"This year, we wanted to give the contest a social media component by opening up the final selection of winners to the public via our Facebook page," said Jeffrey Dinslage, president of Nature Hills Nursery. "We will encourage all of the semi-finalists to contact their own friends, members and social networks to lobby for votes."

To cast a vote for a Green America Awards semi-finalist, a person must "Like" Nature Hills Nursery on Facebook and then click on the entrant of his or her choice to cast a vote.

In the First Round of Facebook voting, a winner will be selected in each of the four head-to-head contests. Voting in the First Round will begin on July 9 and will end on July 18 at 12 midnight Central Time.

The four victorious entrants will then be paired up in the Second Round. Voting in the Second Round will begin on July 20 and will end on July 29 at 12 midnight Central Time. The two victorious entrants will then proceed to the Grand Prize Round from July 31 through August 9.

Winners will be announced on the Nature Hills Nursery Facebook page and http://www.naturehills.com on August 11, 2012. The grand prize-winning garden project will be awarded $2,000 in plants from http://www.naturehills.com. The first prize garden will win $1,250 in plants, while the second and third prize winners will receive $750 and $500 in plants, respectively.
