AppCarousel Licenses Reference Design Kit (RDK)
New license to allow delivery of TV app ecosystem management solutions
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- AppCarousel, a leading provider of custom app store solutions and app ecosystem services, announced today that it has licensed the Reference Design Kit (RDK) from RDK Management, LLC., a joint venture between Comcast Cable, Time Warner Cable, and Liberty Global to deliver AppCarousel's app ecosystem management to TV.
The Reference Design Kit (RDK) is a pre-integrated software bundle that provides a common framework for powering customer-premises equipment (CPE) from TV service providers, including set-top boxes, gateways, and converged devices. The RDK is supported by more than 160 licensees including CE manufacturers, SOCs vendors, software developers, system integrators, and TV service providers. It is administered by the RDK Management LLC, a joint venture between Comcast Cable, Time Warner Cable, and Liberty Global. It enables TV service providers to standardize certain elements of these devices, but also to easily customize the applications and user experiences that ride on top. RDK code is located beneath, and independent of, the application framework or UE/UX/UI layer of these devices.
By licensing the RDK, AppCarousel is now able to provide app ecosystem management services to device and equipment manufacturers, middleware providers and pay-TV operators that use the RDK software stack. AppCarousel's platform and services take away the complexities of app lifecycle management, app store deployment, and the delivery and ongoing management of TV apps.
"We're excited to bring the AppCarousel cloud app platform to the quickly growing RDK community," said Terry Hughes, managing director, AppCarousel. "Our suite of app ecosystem management tools and services are now ready to help the RDK community meet the growing demand for apps across all the devices that their customers use to consume content."
"We are very pleased to welcome AppCarousel as a licensee of the RDK," said Jason Briggs, Senior Director, RDK Management, LLC. "Innovative companies, such as AppCarousel, are working to help create next-generation video services, which leverage the RDK, to support pay-TV operators around the world."
