BUCHAREST, Romania, Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Antiscammers.org is a global civic venture established with the objective of making online marketplaces safer, more trustworthy environments for transacting parties. Antiscammers.org is an NPO whose mission is to expose fraudulent activities that take part online, in revealing all individuals that attempt scamming and impersonation practices.
Online marketplaces are go-to places for many when in need of a good or service. To our frustration, however, these online platforms are getting more and more packed with fraudulent individuals, whose intentions are usually to scam the other party out of a sum of money or an advertised product. Around 50 to 100 fake accounts are created on any global marketplace, on any given day. Craigslist.org, Cars.com, Offerup.com and your favorite online marketplace are among the websites infested by these shady vendors.
These very unscrupulous tactics are the triggers that lead about to the establishment of Antiscammers.org, a digital watchdog committed to making marketplaces more trustworthy places. The initiative is committed to compiling the world's largest database of fraudulent online vendors. This includes a full description and all known aliases and contact details (email addresses, phone numbers, location), as well as a detailed historic of scam transactions.
Antiscammers.org is organized as a non-profit entity, working for online vendors and buyers all over the world, in cleaning up a market where $10 million is lost every year to scammers. The organization is made up of a core team of tech specialists and global contributors, who scrape online marketplaces on a daily basis, in indexing and archiving as many digital frauds as possible. All findings are directly reported to the public, fully free of charge, on the organization's website. Antiscammers' effort is ongoing, with a whole network of global contributors who are filtering new listings and new ads every day.
The organization is not affiliated to any private or public institution in any way, its only stakeholders being the general public who wishes to safely transact online. Antiscammers.org's activity is supported by donations from individuals, who share in the community's objective of working towards a more secure Internet. Support for Antiscammers.org will also soon be available via a Kickstarter campaign, crowd-funding tactic employed in order to expand the organization's network of contributors and so as to keep the service forever free. The NPO is also looking towards assembling the resources needed to develop a free mobile app, one to alert users the second they're interacted by a flagged/suspicious party.
The initiative started off its activity earlier this year, having since already helped hundreds of users with specific requests to investigate their cases. Beyond online scrapping and filtering, Antiscammers.org also reviews particular cases reported by users. The organization's team is available around the clock on its social media channels (Facebook, Twitter), where it takes on requests from those who are mistrustful of the person on the other side of the ad:
"Almost got suckered. Thanks to these guys, I found out I was being scammed before I actually gave out sensitive information." – A*** R*** (USA)
"Thank God I came across y'all's post otherwise things could have turned ugly and I would have lost 1500. Great page." – B*** V*** (USA)
"Great! Thanks x your support and help ... your website the only one in the web. We trust in your job." – M*** R*** Italy
All known scammers uncovered so far as well as requests for reviewing a particular ad/ online vendor can be found on the organization's website. Donations and any form of support to keep this civic movement going are available on the site, via PayPal.
