"Women traditionally care for everyone else before they get around to themselves," said Cassandra Oshinnaiye, Manager of the AARP Decide. Create. Share. campaign, which helps boomer women plan for their retirement years. "With our Me & My Life Makeover events we hope to help women move themselves and their plans for the future farther up the priority list. And with Tanger Outlets' support, we will reach hundreds of women in an unexpected place and in a way that is fun and engaging."
Set in Tanger Outlets' retail environments, the events will feature celebrity guests, makeup styling, fun photo-ops, games, prizes, refreshments and lots of giveaways. During the five-hour event, AARP will host informational sessions with attendees, offering the opportunity for women to truly makeover their life by learning about the benefits of planning ahead for their long-term care needs. Leeza Gibbons, caregiving advocate and host of AARP's TV show "My Generation" (on PBS stations), will appear at the Branson, MO at the Me & My Life Makeover event to talk about her experience as a caregiver and its effect on her plans for her own future. At the Riverhead, NY, event, best-selling author and Good Morning America contributor Lee Woodruff, will share insights from her life and from caring for her husband ABC correspondent Bob Woodruff after his life-changing injury covering the Iraq war. At the Rehoboth, DE event, 2Boomer Babes, Kathy Bernard and Barbara Kline, the Delmarva-based NPR talk radio hosts, will share their personal stories of the highs and lows of being part of the sandwich generation and caring for kids and older parents.
Women are an especially important audience for advice on future planning as they statistically outlive their male partners by an average of five years. More than two-thirds of all Americans over 65 will need some kind of long term care. Staff and resource experts from AARP and other organizations will be on hand to answer individual questions and offer up various practical planning tools and resources.
Carrie Geldner, Senior Vice President, Tanger Outlets, said, "For years, Tanger has worked to empower women through efforts including our signature PINKStyle program, which has raised more than $10 million dollars for breast cancer research. We are pleased now to add to that record our support of AARP's efforts to educate women about the critical need to plan ahead for their retirement years."
The Me & My Life Makeover events will take place Saturday, October 29 in Branson, Missouri; Friday, November 4 in Riverhead, New York; and Saturday, November 12 in Rehoboth, Delaware. The events are free and open to the public. More information is available at www.aarp.org/decide and www.tangeroutlet.com/aarp.
