Anonymous' Op Icarus: Cyberattacks on Banks Around the World
Anonymous' Op Icarus has unleashed DDoS cyberattacks that have shut down national bank websites from Mexico to Greece.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Anonymous recently launched a series of cyberattacks that have shut down the websites of central banks in several countries, including the Dominican Republic, Panama, Kenya, and Greece—part of a campaign called Op Icarus, which targets the global banking system. The activist hacker group, known for taking on organizations as diverse as Scientology, the Ku Klux Klan, and ISIS, called out the global banking system for "crimes against humanity" and vowed to begin a campaign that "will strike a new bank every single day."
As part of its mission to share and analyze information security news, Peerlyst (https://www.peerlyst.com) has published a blog that discusses the recent wave of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that Anonymous has used to take out central banking websites, offering perspective on how damaging DDoS attacks can be, as well as how to protect against them. Given the subject matter, it's perhaps fitting that the post comes from a journalist who shares cybersecurity perspective on Peerlyst under a pen name.
NewsWatcher writes, "The Twitter hashtag OpIcarus is full of statements around banks being evil and banks perpetuating evil. It will be interesting to see if OpIcarus marks a return to a very active period by Anonymous and whether or not their efforts will have any impact. If they manage to cause some harm, we may see some criminal investigations and possible arrests in the near future and we may see lawmakers (ab)using the chance to pass some law that will take away further rights from us."
