SEATTLE, March 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Trupanion donated over $45,000 to non-profit animal shelters across the U.S. and Canada since the 2013 launch of its Shelter Support Program.
Trupanion, a medical coverage provider for pets, launched the Shelter Support Program in March 2013 in service of their mission to financially support shelters and promote finding forever homes for pets in need. Over the past year, the company partnered with an increasing number of animal shelters across North America through their program.
The program provides certificates for 30 days of medical coverage to newly adopted shelter pets, offering new pet owners financial peace of mind as their companion settles into their home. For pets that use the certificate from a shelter, there are no waiting periods so coverage starts immediately. "We want these pets to find their forever home. Having the certificate can be critical during the first few weeks. If a new pet shows signs of a health problem, many are simply returned to the shelter and the cycle continues. The financial backing of the certificate makes it easy to follow up on the commitment a pet owner makes when taking their new pet home," said Lisa Marcotte, Business Development Manager at Trupanion.
In addition to offering certificates for medical coverage, shelters earn donations from Trupanion for participating in the program. The donations can be applied to any aspect of the shelter, including food, toys or improvements in technology and infrastructure. In December, the program was extended to include smaller rescue organizations in the U.S. and Canada. The company encourages all animal rescue groups to contact Trupanion's Shelter Support Team for more information.
While health is a priority for many shelters, an animal's transition to a new environment can bring out the unexpected. In the past year, Trupanion found the most common types of claims received by pets in the program were related to respiratory issues, gastrointestinal conditions (especially foreign body ingestions) and fractures. The company paid out almost $100,000 worth of claims to newly adoptive pet owners who initially activated a Trupanion policy through the program. The most expensive claims were related to gastrointestinal conditions and fractures. Most notable is a rescued Siamese mix kitten who received over $9,000 for a foreign body ingestion claim when she ate pieces of a foam mat.
