ANGA Statement on the New York Times Series
WASHINGTON, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is a statement by America's Natural Gas Alliance President and CEO Regina Hopper on the recent articles by the New York Times, challenging the broad scientific consensus around the vast potential abundance of North American shale gas.
"Recent New York Times reporting on natural gas has been deeply flawed, inaccurate and misleading. The paper has apparently chosen to ignore important facts that would have presented Times' readers with a more balanced perspective.
"The Times' articles have used out-of-context quotes by people the reporter appears never to have interviewed, have quoted unnamed sources with no account of their expertise or potential bias, and have disregarded specific and substantive information supplied to the reporter that ran counter to his story line.
"This selective use of facts implies a clear bias and continues the reporter's demonstrated pattern of telling one-sided stories without providing readers with any sense of context, nuance or balance.
"Earlier faulty reporting on water contamination has been contradicted by sampling of water supplies in the state of Pennsylvania. And the more recent claims questioning the natural gas industry's ability to tap into our vast potential natural gas resource are challenged by the world's leading geoscientists, and by numerous independent analysts, and academic and industry data, not to mention the federal government. All of this information was provided to the paper, but ignored in the articles.
"The fact is that we are now producing vast supplies of natural gas, and as demand grows there will be ample clean, American natural gas to meet future needs. Advances in horizontal drilling technology just in the last two years allow us to reach sources of natural gas that before were not accessible.
"The established facts are that our nation is blessed with a wealth of natural gas, and this abundance is advancing our economy, our energy security and our environment. If the New York Times has an agenda – and it appears it does – that agenda should be disclosed to the Times' readers. We are supplying the public with the same facts the Times had and withheld from its readers."
