ANGA Statement on Release of Senate Energy and Climate Bill
WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Background: America's Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) President and CEO Regina Hopper issued the following statement on the energy and climate legislative plan offered today by Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman.
"We appreciate the work Senators Kerry and Lieberman have done to advance a cleaner, more secure energy future for the United States. While continuing to review the proposal, we look forward to working with members of the Senate, and all stakeholders, to ensure that any legislation capitalizes on the vast potential clean, American natural gas has to fuel our nation's power plants, industrial plants and vehicles.
"We appreciate the inclusion of language aimed at helping move toward the greater use of natural gas in merchant power generation and vehicles. While a useful starting point, we believe much more could be done right now to significantly reduce greenhouse gases and other pollutants by providing clean energy transition incentives to electric utilities as well.
"Natural gas is clean, abundant and produced right here in America. It can be used on a much greater scale today to power our businesses and homes, significantly reducing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions, such as NOx, SOx and mercury, while reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
"As lawmakers continue to work on a constructive path forward, we urge them to take full advantage of the many benefits of our abundant domestic supply of natural gas. It is now the established, scientific consensus that the United States has as much natural gas as Saudi Arabia has oil. We are the envy of the world for this resource. It is time we put it to greater use for our nation's economy, environment and security."
