ANGA Statement on General Motors' Plan to Build Natural Gas Vehicles
WASHINGTON, May 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Background: America's Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) President and CEO Regina Hopper issued the following statement on General Motors' announcement that it will begin offering Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered versions of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans to fleet and commercial customers beginning later this year.
"We are thrilled that General Motors is offering natural gas-fueled vans to commercial customers. This is a major step forward for natural gas fleets all over the country.
"Many cities from Dallas to Los Angeles and Oklahoma City to Boston have adopted natural gas-powered vehicles for a variety of different uses, and infrastructure continues to expand to fuel these vehicles. Now with GM's announcement, companies and governments can purchase these vehicles directly from the automaker.
"Natural gas vehicles are cleaner and cost less to operate than those that run on gasoline or diesel fuel. In addition, the United States is blessed with a vast supply of natural gas, thanks to new discoveries in shale formations across the country. That ensures a stable supply of the fuel for many generations to come.
"This first of a kind commercial scale offering is a strong step in expanding the use of vehicles that rely on clean fuels produced right here in America. Use of vehicles like the ones GM is providing can also reduce our dependence on overseas oil. We applaud General Motors' leadership and vision for taking this important step for America."
