Andrews Kurth Adds Former Federal Prosecutor Jay Dewald
DALLAS, July 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce that former Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Dewald has joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice.
Mr. Dewald has 13 years of criminal prosecution experience and has handled more than 100 jury trials in federal and state courts. He has worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas in Dallas since 2007, most recently serving as the Deputy Criminal Chief in the Special Prosecutions Section. In that position, he supervised all public corruption, health care fraud, civil rights and environmental crimes prosecutions.
"Jay is an experienced courtroom attorney, and his knowledge of the inner workings of federal agencies will be a solid benefit to our clients," says Bob Jewell, Managing Partner of Andrews Kurth. "His dual roles of leadership within the U.S. Department of Justice and as a prosecutor on high-profile, meaningful trials present an impressive combination of expertise."
Before becoming Deputy Criminal Chief at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mr. Dewald supervised the Major Crimes Section, which handled various white-collar cases involving, among other areas, securities fraud, money laundering and government-program fraud. He also has served as the U.S. Attorney's Office's Criminal Health Care Fraud Coordinator and as a member of its Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force. Prior to this work, he served five years as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County.
"As much as I have loved being a prosecutor, I'm definitely looking forward to starting this next chapter of my career," Mr. Dewald says. "Andrews Kurth is known for having some of the finest litigators in Texas, and I can attest to their courtroom skills. I look forward to working alongside them."
Mr. Dewald earned his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1997. He earned two bachelor's degrees, magna cum laude, in economics and international studies from Southern Methodist University in 1994. He serves as an instructor at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's Southern Regional Trial Advocacy Program, and has been a guest lecturer in First Amendment law at SMU.
Mr. Dewald will office in both Dallas and Houston.
