HINGHAM, Mass., March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- When the Friends of Mel Foundation learned in 2007 that there might be lead in the signature bracelet -- that they give to supporters when they make a minimum $15.00 donation -- they immediately took action. The Foundation voluntarily took the proactive step of replacing the lead components with silver-plated rings.
Executive Director, Pauline Alighieri stated, "We worked long and hard to build our reputation as an upstanding foundation that helps people. Friends of Mel emerged even stronger from this ordeal." People all over the country still proudly display the brightly colored beaded bracelets on their wrists symbolizing an individual's ability and commitment to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
The Friends of Mel Foundation was created to fund promising and creative projects that impact the care of cancer patients at both the grassroots and institutional levels. It was named after Mel Simmons, a spiritual woman of legendary generosity and boundless energy, who lost her life to breast cancer. Throughout her five-year battle, Mel guided and comforted other cancer patients and survivors. The Foundation proudly keeps her work alive. As a result of the success of the bracelets, the Foundation was able to donate over one million dollars to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center for research. Since then nearly as much has been donated to other cancer programs throughout the country which provide education and patient support.
Recently, a special edition of the popular "Mel's bracelet" was created. For a $45.00 donation supporters receive a lovely bracelet complete with Swarovski crystal rings between the colorful signature beads. This token of friendship arrives in beautiful packaging – ready for gifting.
