Ampro Industries, Inc. Collaborates with the University Libraries at the University of Memphis to create the National African American Photographic Archive
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ampro Industries, Inc., and the Rudner Family feel a continuing responsibility to give back to the community that has supported its business for over sixty years. One of their most exciting initiatives in this area is The National African American Photographic Archive (NAAPA), a collaborative effort with the University Libraries at the University of Memphis. NAAPA's mission is to preserve and share black Americans' memories, culture and past experiences to ensure the future is firmly rooted in and nourished by an understanding and appreciation of what has come before.

Cheri and Henry Rudner feel that photographic history is important to both families and society. Think of all the great images that disappear along with every person who never had a chance to share them. Photographic history preserves the past for us to learn from: how those who came before us thought and behaved; what life was like for them; how they worked and played; the social, religious and political context of their lives. These archives will provide a framework for our understanding of the past and help us to remember and cherish it in ways that words alone cannot.
"Seeded" with materials already owned by the Special Collections Department of the University of Memphis Libraries, the NAAPA project solicits the donation or loan of photographic images of people, places, and events that are now or may in the future be of importance to African-American and American history and culture. The NAAPA is meant to grow and evolve. To inquire about making a donation from your own collection contact [email protected].
