Smith joined AMI Metals, a leading supplier of aerospace raw material, in 1983, and has served as President since March 2000. In selecting Smith for the award, judges noted that his "leadership, unrelenting energy and drive has been contagious throughout the entire AMI Metals organization, and that is why the company today is so successful… He is a compassionate man who truly cares about the AMI Metals family, its customers, vendors and the industry," according to judging materials.
"Scott Smith is a model of integrity and success; he exemplifies the leadership that Gil Speed exhibited throughout his lifetime. With this award, Penton's Aviation Week Network is proud to recognize Scott's achievements and honor Gil's legacy," said Warren N. Bimblick, Group President, Penton.
"I am truly humbled by this honor. I reflect back on the years of Conferences gone past and have nothing but fond memories of Gil and how special he was to so many," said Smith. "The SpeedNews events lead the global aviation industry in terms of information sharing, building relationships and networking. You have me truly speechless."
The Gilbert W. Speed Award honors the legacy of the man who founded SpeedNews, the aviation industry's newsletter of record, in 1979 and established its annual suppliers Conference in 1987. Speed, who passed away in January 2014 at age 81, was a well-respected industry partner and touched many lives during his 60+-year tenure in the aviation industry. The award's inaugural winner, honored in 2015, was David P. Storch, Chairman & CEO of AAR.
