THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Amgen and the Amgen Foundation today announced that they will support nonprofit organizations providing medical relief and vital health services for patients affected by Hurricane Sandy. The contribution of $250,000 will support relief efforts, including $100,000 to Direct Relief International to advance its work with hundreds of clinics in the affected areas. The balance of donations will be disbursed to organizations that specifically support dialysis patients, for whom timely care is critical.
Amgen selects recipient organizations for their capacity and experience in responding to large-scale disaster relief efforts. Nonprofit partners like Direct Relief have proven their capacity to deliver aid over many decades in such times of crisis.
"This devastating storm has impacted the lives of millions of people on the East Coast," said Jean Lim Terra, president of the Amgen Foundation. "In this time of great need, we know it is essential that patients have continued access to vital medicines and treatments. It is our hope that our support, along with the generosity of other companies, will make a meaningful difference in patients' lives."
